One of the principles of fengshui is that beams and pillars interfere with chi, or the flow of energy. The cure for this is sometimes held to be mirrors placed on each side of a pillar and, perhaps, wooden flutes dangling from beams.
Hmm. Let's see, I'm building a post and beam house.

Got home to SF, opened suitcases to muffled explosion and treasures flew out everywhere. Said treasures are making all here weep with envy--which was precisely the point. Maybe I'll go in with you on some of those mirrors.
We miss Moxie terribly, but Maurice du Paradou says nix on any small fluff ball coming into HIS house. He's quite firm on the subject.
