Whenever I clear up the Block Island houses for the season, there are a lot of condiments that have to be given away, thrown out or taken home. Despite the extortionate island prices, no incoming tenant wants to see a half-used bottle of ketchup. For what else they don't want to see, check out this New York Times piece on
summer house nightmares.
This is just the jam that made its way back to New York. You should see the mustard and shampoo!

Bummer, I just tried to make four pb&j's and only had enough jam for three.
One could put up a polite but firm sign, saying:
Please Do Not Leave Your Leftover Anything.
And Or:
We Don't Want Your Three Ounces of Head and Shoulders.
How's that for hospitable?
My special pet peeve is the gallon size Tide or whatever with one ounce left. God forbid someone other than me could recycle it.
Here is the answer: buy your own jars and mix them. Label the jars as surf city jam-balaya and leave them as a housewarming gift.
