After one big jolt,
Dianne said, "Hope it doesn't get any of our animals."
"My thoughts exactly," said Frank.
But in the morning, SP, a young gelding out of a world champion stallion, was dead of a lightening bolt. For the rest of the day, Dianne talked to insurance companies and waited for a backhoe. You don't want to wait long in this weather.

The backhoe man arrived before the insurance company responded. Now the ins. co. is asking for pictures "that prove he was killed by lightning"...or a vet's statement that he was. Before I even knew what the ins. co. wanted I asked the backhoe man if he noticed any burn marks on the side he was lying on. He said no, but that he didn't really pay that much attention. He buried 12 of our neighbor's calves a couple of yrs. ago & said not a one had a mark on them. He said unless it is a direct hit & then exits that there won't be a burn. He also said that the majority of time the animals aren't struck, but the lightning goes into the ground & then 'runners' are spread out in every direction & that's how the animals die - that it takes very few amps to stop their heart. He said the 12 heifers were standing on a pond bank & part of them were on one side & part on the opposite side, but it got all of them. Thank goodness SP was standing by himself or we could have lost an entire herd. I suppose there's always something to be thankful for even in the midst of tragedy.
