ed report

We had an outing. It was great!

home sweet home

Came home to a very sweet gift from my nephew Mason, who, with his partner Tisha, had been staying at the Dowling Intercontinental. Well, one gift was the pristine apartment. The other was this picture, which perfectly captures the view from my usual seat. That view, BTW, was carefully curated by me to be pleasing to my eye. (Yes, so hidebound am I that I have one in every place I live!)

upcoming donna ferrato

So this is happening. B there or B square. I will be there!

HOLY at Daniel Cooney Fine Art
On View: June 23-July 29
Opening Event: Thurs June 23, 6-8pm
Floor 9, 508 W 26th St, NY, NY, 10001 Daniel Cooney Fine Art announces our first and very timely solo exhibition of photographs and unique collages by the feminist activist artist Donna Ferrato. Celebrated for her notorious photographs of domestic violence that were published in her iconic book “Living With The Enemy” (Aperture, 1991) Ferrato has photographed the complex lives of women for over 50 years. The exhibition proudly shares Ferrato’s work that intimately examines the domestic, professional, personal and political lives of women. Additionally, 40 never before seen collage works will debut, expanding the public perception of Ferrato’s artistic practice.

This exhibition is timed to correspond with the expected overturn of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court of The United States this month. While the exhibition is a defiant response to the expected SCOTUS announcement it is primarily a celebration of women’s spiritual liberation.

And even now Donna is rolling across country carrying the public sculpture she did on commission for the City of New York. This event will be held on Saturday

Opening event: June 25, 2022 12pm-1pm
With a performance by the Gibney Move to Move Beyond Storytellers
Collect Pond Park, 130 Leonard St, NY, NY, 10013

the upcoming open-air art installation, Wall of Silence – this will be the first sculpture by Donna Ferrato. A response to a call for art by the NYC Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence (ENDGBV) the sculpture will inhabit Tribeca's Collect Pond Park.  The piece will be on view from June 25 through November 20, 2022. South of Canal Street, between the New York County Family Court and the Criminal Court Buildings, the site-specific piece will commune with citizens, families, lawyers, judges, and the diverse community of the criminal legal system it reflects back on.

Ferrato, along with ENDGBV and Parks, will be hosting an opening event on June 25 that will feature survivors, advocates and city representatives, as well as a new work by the Gibney Move to Move Beyond Storytellers. The movement piece will be performed alongside the Wall of Silence in addition to a sound work that was created in collaboration with Ferrato. Donna talks about it here.

sunsets

As a rule I'm not a big fan of sunset pictures. They often seem trite. But sometimes there are sunsets that you just can't ignore. This painting by Katie captured one from my driveway. And the one below I got by standing in my bathtub. I must have taken like 10 pictures as it developed from yellow to orange to red to pink to purple. It was quite something.

graduation day

Graduation day dawned beautifully on Block Island. Meanwhile, Chris was steaming Simon's graduation gown. Simon has been living with Chris and Hannah for most of his senior year of high school in Providence, during which they coaxed, scolded and wrangled him through his final year and into college acceptances. It takes a fucking village, but fortunately the Family That Ate the World is one. A triumphant day for all.

they caught the covid

(To the tune of I Shot the Sheriff)

They caught the covid
But they swear that they had their shots
They caught the covid
Two years of distancing for naught.
Feel free to write more lines. This is all I got!

So Katie and Mike came out, but alas got sick and tested positive for Covid. Fortunately I had not seen them as they got to the island and went straight to bed. Katie had been hoping to paint for her upcoming BI show. She felt well enough to get a couple paintings in at the end of her stay and distance visit, but when they got home they felt worse again.

Sorry I have flaked out, but uploading anything here in Block Island is just tough. Also many guests them.
