aging in place

Joined Papa for lunch in downtown Talladega, where he forgathers with a group of guys on a semiregular basis. Yes, he is 88 and does not dye his hair. And yes, he drives his Mazda pickup himself. This is good news for Wolfen, who has four living grandparents in good health. By her age I had zero.
Dad had the famous Congealed Salad at the Cafe Royale. Sounds great, doesn't it?

Its a Southern thing--my mother considered congealed salad an indespensible part of any menu when there would be guests for lunch. It's really not so bad, sort of like frozen jello with little bits of foreign matter suspended in it. Especially yummy with a big dollop of mayo on top. Not so appealing as it starts to melt, which is the state it usually is in when it appears at the table in MS/AL in mid-August.

And what did you have? Chicken fried steak again?

Catfish? Hush puppies?

Apparently at the Royale, they top it with cool whip mixed with cream cheese.
I myself had chicken tortilla soup.
The catfish and hush puppies were today at the Ark.
And to Chris G: nyanynyanypoopoo!

I am quite fond of the Royale's congealed salad. I especially like the name; anything congealed is okay with me.

Oh, and anyone that thinks the Royale offers fried food just does NOT know their Emporia in Talladega.

Time to come out of the closet, Anonymous. Who is the secret Talladegan in the mix?

I'm guessing it is Jan unless Ed knows more about Talladega than we've realized. He is very knowledgeable on the customs of many places around the globe.
